Apple stuck on bulk sale of iPhone to tourists in Japan, will have to pay heavy tax

US smartphone company Apple’s Japan unit will have to pay an additional tax of about $105 million on bulk duty-free sales of iPhones and other devices to foreign tourists. The Tokyo Regional Taxation Bureau found that the company had not paid sales tax of approximately $1,04,16,84,000 over the past two years.

Kyodo News has a Report I told that the Taxation Bureau had started the investigation in this matter last year. Many unusual transactions have been found in it. There is also a case of a tourist buying hundreds of devices from the company’s store. Apple has been charged an additional tax of $105 million for not reporting such sales. Foreign tourists are allowed to buy souvenirs or items of daily use within six months of their arrival in Japan. If foreign tourists buy products for resale, then tax has to be paid on them.

Some devices, such as the iPhone, are cheaper in Japan than in other countries. The Taxation Bureau suspects that some vendors are abusing Japan’s duty-free system to sell products to tourists. Earlier, there have been some cases of bulk sales of cosmetics and other products to tourists. After this, the Taxation Bureau had issued guidance for department stores.

Apple is also facing difficulties in Brazil. company had stopped giving chargers in the box with the iPhone series. The company had said that it has decided not to ship a charger with the new iPhones due to environmental reasons. Instead of a charger, a Type-C cable is being given in the box of the iPhone. Customers have to buy iPhone charger separately. However, there is resentment in many markets about this. In Brazil, the government and the court fined Apple millions of dollars for this and banned the sale of iPhones without chargers. The Justice Ministry in Brazil recently ordered the seizure of hundreds of iPhones from retail stores. After this, Brazil’s consumer protection regulator seized hundreds of iPhones from retail stores for not providing chargers with the iPhone.
