BMW has developed high-tech bobsleigh shoes

Classic bobsleigh shoes have several rows of fixed spikes. BMW is developing its own concept, using interchangeable stud plates that can be adapted to the different needs of athletes.

The production of such a product begins with 3D scanning of shoes and designing plates with spikes. BMW employees then print the plates from metal powder using laser welding. Prototypes can be tested with different alloys to improve the design of future shoes.

“We have been using 3D printing to produce components for prototypes, one-off customizations as well as series production for more than 30 years,” said Claudia Ruckl from the BMW Group.

By automating the production process, BMW will be able to create cleat plates for different shoe sizes. In addition, bobsled shoes may have different designs and attachment points depending on the weather conditions in which the races are held.

The first tests at the World Cup showed excellent results. Athletes praised the shoes for their ergonomics, comfortable sole shape and the effectiveness of the new studs. BMW is planning a mass release of the new product for the 2026 Winter Olympics.
