Personal data of individuals is being sold on the messaging platform Telegram, and this alarming leak has shocked everyone. The leaked information includes sensitive details such as Aadhaar, Voter ID, and more.
If you think your personal data is completely safe, this is a serious warning. A new report has revealed that a Telegram bot is selling users’ personal information for just ₹99. This data includes Aadhaar numbers, Voter ID, PAN card details, addresses, and even parents’ names.
According to a report by Digit, the Telegram bot—whose name has not been disclosed for security reasons—is dangerously retrieving complete profiles using just a mobile number. The report states that the bot was tested, and within seconds, it revealed the person’s name, father’s name, current and previous addresses, alternate mobile number, and Aadhaar-related information. This bot is selling the data for just ₹99 and offering unlimited monthly access for ₹4,999.
Where Is This Personal Data Coming From?
It is believed that the data has been obtained from various breaches that occurred over the past few years. The information may have been collected over time from public utility services, telecom companies, and fintech apps. The report also notes that although some of the data is 3 to 4 years old, it is still accurate enough to be used for identity theft, fake KYC, loan fraud, SIM cloning, fake social media profiles, and even for targeting individuals or their families.
How to Protect Yourself
You can reduce the risk of such data misuse by taking a few key precautions. First, visit the UIDAI website and lock your Aadhaar number. This prevents anyone from verifying it without your consent. Also, be alert if you receive any unexpected OTPs or SIM porting requests.
Before uploading personal documents on any fintech app or website, make sure to verify the platform’s authenticity. If you notice any suspicious activity, immediately call 1930 or file a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in.
