The announcement of providing free electricity to one crore people is not a small decision. This scheme will start by installing solar panels on the roofs of 1 crore houses. After that, 300 units will be given free under Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana. This scheme will help every user to save up to Rs 18000. If experts are to be believed, the government’s decision to provide free electricity through solar energy on rooftops is being considered as a double victory for the government. First, the government will reduce the negative impact on the environment through this scheme. The second benefit will be that the pockets of poor and middle class people will get relief. Let us also tell you how this scheme can save you Rs 18,000. Before this, it is very important to understand the Suryoday Yojana.

What is Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana?

The objective of Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana is to supply electricity to homes through solar roof installations. Besides, additional funds also have to be provided for additional power generation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had made this announcement on 22 January 2024. The Prime Minister had also requested that a major national campaign be launched to encourage a large number of residential users to install rooftop solar energy systems.

According to information from the government, the Prime Minister had held a meeting immediately after his Ayodhya visit on the auspicious occasion of the consecration of Suryavanshi Lord Shri Ram. This meeting was held regarding installation of rooftop solar on 1 crore houses. In which Pradhan Mantri Suryoday Yojana was discussed. During the meeting, the Prime Minister said that houses having roofs can reduce their electricity bills by using the sun’s energy and they can become self-reliant for their electricity needs.

Who is eligible for the scheme

Through Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana, 1 crore families will be provided access to rooftop solar energy. This scheme is to help poor and middle class families in reducing their electricity bills.

What are the benefits of a grid-connected rooftop solar system?

  1. Savings to the consumer in electricity bill.
  2. Use of empty roof space, no need for extra land.
  3. No need for additional transmission and distribution (T&D) lines.
  4. Due to balance between electricity consumption and production, T&D loss is reduced.
  5. Improvement in tail-end grid voltage and reduction in system congestion.
  6. Long term energy and ecological security by reducing pollution.
  7. Better management of daytime peak load by Discoms/Utility.

Annual savings of Rs 18 thousand

Now the biggest question is that how will the common people save due to 300 units of free electricity. Let us try to understand this as an example. The average price of electricity per unit is around Rs 5. If 300 units of electricity are available for free in a month, then its cost is around Rs 1500. If it is calculated with 12 months, then the price of 3600 units for the whole year will be Rs 18,000. This means that by getting 300 units of free electricity in a month and 3600 units in a year, people will save Rs 18000. This means that one crore families will save Rs 18 thousand crore in a year.
