The teams of Yandex and VK (the former Mail.ru Group) removed links to the official websites of Instagram and Facebook (banned in Russia; owned by Meta, which is recognized as extremist in Russia) from branded search services.
Thus, in the search results of Yandex.Search and Mail.ru Search, links to the official sites of these social networks are no longer shown for Instagram and Facebook queries. Instead, it offers news, Wikipedia articles, links to apps, and other third-party sites.
In the Yandex search, an explanation is also given at the top of the page: “Some links are missing in the search results due to the requirements of the legislation of the Russian Federation.”
The Yandex help clarifies that, according to the law “On Information, Information Technologies and Information Protection,” search engines do not have the right to show Russian users links to resources included in the Roskomnadzor’s unified register of prohibited information. The press release added:
According to the legislation of the Russian Federation, search engines are required to exclude links to sites and their “mirrors” as soon as Roskomnadzor enters them into the register. Synchronization with the registry occurs automatically.
