Will get rid of spam calls and messages from next month! TRAI’s new AI filter will be useful

TRAI has prepared to implement new rules to ban spam calls and SMS. From May 1, all telecom operators are going to implement new technology in their system, which will filter spam or fake calls and SMS. Telecom regulator TRAI has talked about using an artificial intelligence filter, through which fake calls and messages coming from banking or other marketing companies on any user’s number can be stopped.

TRAI’s new rule is going to come into force from 1 May 2023. From this date all operators will setup the new filter in their service. The filter will detect and block fake calls and SMS going to the phone through artificial intelligence. TRAI itself has ordered telecom companies to add this spam filter.

Airtel has already announced to provide such AI filters in this regard. Whereas, Jio is preparing to install AI filters for fake calls and messages. Jio has not yet given clear information about the implementation of the AI filter, but it is believed that when TRAI has ordered its implementation from May 1, 2023, other operators including Jio will implement the new filter from May 1. Under the new technology, TRAI has also demanded a ban on promotional calls to 10 digit phone numbers.

TRAI is also planning to introduce Caller ID feature, which will display the name and photo of the caller. Airtel and Jio are also in talks with the Truecaller app in this regard. However, the company is refraining from implementing the caller ID feature in view of privacy.

In January this year, industry body COAI had argued that the implementation of Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) should not be made mandatory but kept optional for telecom operators, as the association filed a technical, privacy and regulatory filing with regulator TRAI. Cost concerns are shared.
