The Yandex team has announced the launch of a new interesting feature in its proprietary mapping service. A new layer called “Day and Night Map” became available in Yandex Maps.
According to the developers, the “Map of Day and Night” helps to see what time night falls in different parts of the world. The layer is launched by the day of the winter solstice.
So far, you can observe the movement of the Sun only in the mobile and desktop web versions of the maps. The layer in the upper right corner of the main page is activated. The timeline allows you to see how day and night succeed each other at different times, including looking into the future. The calculations were performed with an accuracy of 2 minutes.
The press release explained:
The day and night map clearly shows why Moscow and Vladivostok have different times, St. Petersburg has white nights, and gets dark slower in Murmansk than in Sochi. The new layer will be useful in studying various phenomena and processes in astronomy and geography. And also when planning long-distance travels: you can see and understand what time it will be best to walk, and what time it gets dark. Among other things, the movement of the twilight line is simply interesting to watch.
