Why does the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max need three Taptic Engines? Apple may ditch mechanical buttons in new flagships, according to Ming-Chi Kuo

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that Apple may be planning to replace the pushable volume and power buttons on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max smartphones.

He remembered the days of the iPhone 7, in which the pressed Home button was replaced with a touch one. Recall that the work of the Home button in the iPhone 7, iPhone 8, iPhone SE2 and iPhone 3 is carried out using touch recognition.

“The volume buttons and power button on the two older iPhone 15 models may have a new design (similar to the design of the Home button on the iPhone 7/8/SE2 and 3). This button will replace the usual physical/mechanical buttons,” said Ming-Chi Kuo.

Ming-Chi Kuo Kuo says that Apple will rely on the Taptic Engine’s vibration motors to mimic the feeling of tapping. The standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models will keep the buttons you press.

“Due to this design change, the number of Taptic Engines used in each iPhone will increase from one to three. As a result, existing vendors Taptic Engine, Luxshare ICT (1st vendor) and AAC Technologies (2nd vendor) will benefit significantly,” the analyst added.

The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are also expected to be the company’s first smartphones with USB-C.
