Kerch Strait Dispute: In the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, both the countries have suffered a lot of loss of life and property so far. In this war which started in January 2022, the armies of both the countries are fiercely attacking each other. Many countries including India want this war to stop and both the countries should sit face to face and find a solution. At the same time, apart from the battlefield, Russia and Ukraine are face to face in the International Court regarding a bridge matter. On Monday, a hearing was held on this Kerch Strait dispute.
What is the Kerch Strait dispute?
After snatching Crimea from Ukraine, Russia started building a 19 kilometer long bridge in the Kerch Strait. After this the Kerch Strait dispute started. Ukraine alleges that Russia is trying to take complete control of the Kerch Strait.
This bridge is very important for Russia
This bridge connects Russia to Crimea. Not only this, fuel, food grains and other products are supplied to Crimea through this bridge. Apart from this, the Russian army in Ukraine is using this bridge to send supplies for its soldiers. If this bridge is closed or if Russia is not able to use this bridge, then Ukraine will face new problems in the war. Apart from this, this bridge also connects the Sea of Azov to the Black Sea.
Ukraine has attacked the bridge
Zelensky knows very well how important this bridge is for the Russian army. Keeping this in mind, a few days ago the Ukrainian army attacked this bridge. In simple words, Zelensky wants to demolish this bridge built by Russia. Ukraine has also accused Russia that Russia has deliberately built it at a low height, so that ships coming from all over the world cannot pass under it. Only small Russian ships can pass through this route.
In whose favour will the decision come
Both the countries are accusing each other. Russia has appealed to the International Court to dismiss all the claims of Ukraine. On the other hand, Ukraine does not seem to be backing down on the Kerch Strait dispute. Currently, this hearing will continue till October 5.
