WhatsApp lost the status of the most popular messenger in Russia

According to Russian mobile operators, for the first time in a long time, the popular app lost its lead to its main competitor. The comparison was based on the average volume of traffic in messaging apps – and for the brainchild of Meta, it has already been reduced by a factor of three compared to the fall of 2020.

Telegram became the most popular messenger in the country in March 2022, according to Vedomosti, citing a statement from the press service of MegaFon. According to company representatives, in the first two weeks of the month, the share of the application in the total traffic in the category increased from 48% to 63% compared to February. In addition, the consumption of mobile traffic per day has also increased – up to 101 MB per user (WhatsApp – 26 MB, Viber – 8 MB).

Similar information was provided to journalists by Beeline employees. They noted that, unlike a competitor, Telegram allows the transmission of messages and large multimedia files. According to the source, Telegram traffic has grown six times since the fall of 2020. Representatives of MTS and Tele2 did not promptly respond to a request from journalists.

According to the analytical company Mediascope, as of last month, about 54 million Russian subscribers used the Telegram messenger at least once. The Whatsapp audience at the same time was 84 million citizens of the Russian Federation over the age of 12.
