What lies beneath the surface of Mars



It turned out that the top three meters of the InSight landing site is composed of sand, and the next 20 meters is volcanic rock, shattered by meteor impacts. Beneath this are lava flows separated by sediments that have formed a long time ago. Researchers believe that the uppermost lava flows formed about 1.7 billion years ago, and the deepest – 3.6 billion years ago.
