However, have you ever wondered what exactly is the aspect ratio and how it affects the display? Let’s learn more about this.

What is the aspect ratio?

The aspect ratio is the ratio of the width and height of the screen. It is mainly W: H. W means width and H means height. If the screen aspect ratio of a phone is 16: 9. This means that the width of the phone is divided into 16 parts. The height is evenly divided into 9 parts. The horizontal bars that are formed to divide the screen in this ratio are called letter boxes.

Changes in the aspect ratio

Apart from mobile, other screens including TVs also support aspect ratio. Initially, 4: 3 aspect ratio was used for monitors and TVs. Till 2003, 4: 3 aspect ratio screens were used for computer monitors and TV screens launched all over the world including India. Some monitors came with a 5: 4 aspect ratio. However, after 2006, 16:10 aspect ratio screens started appearing in computer monitors. Changes are starting to emerge from laptop displays. Between these, 16: 9 and 16:10 aspect ratios were used. The reason for the new aspect ratio is the wide screen display. The new aspect ratio makes it better to play games and use apps. By 2008, screen monitors with 16:10 and 16: 9 aspect ratios were standard. By 2011-12, monitors with a 4: 3 aspect ratio were almost closed.

As far as TV is concerned, before 2010, most companies used screens with a 4: 3 aspect ratio. But since then, the 16: 9 aspect ratio has become almost standard. The same aspect ratio is used for new HD and FHD TVs. The 18: 9 aspect ratio is rarely seen on TV. Currently TVs come with 21: 9 aspect ratio. As far as mobiles are concerned, until 2010, mobile phones used 3: 2 and 5: 3 aspect ratio screens. With the advent of smartphones, screens with a 16: 9 aspect ratio are being used.

Till 2016, phones were coming with 16: 9 aspect ratio. But, in 2017, Samsung has given the phone an Infinity display with 18: 9 aspect ratio. The bezel in the phone also decreased with this screen. People started getting wide screens even in small devices. Notch screen phones came with a 19: 9, water drop notch, punch hole display and a popup camera phone with a 19.5: 9 aspect ratio. Sony and Motorola have also introduced phones with a 21: 9 aspect ratio screen.

What difference does an aspect ratio make? You may have had a similar question. So when using mobile games and apps, there is no difference in aspect ratio. Because, these screens are adjusted according to the aspect ratio and resolution. But, watching the movie makes a difference in the aspect ratio. Any picture is recorded with 21: 9 aspect ratio. While looking at the picture on the screen that comes with the second aspect ratio, a black spot appears on the side. These are called pillar boxes.
