The Ministry of Roads and Transport has notified new rules for regulation, control and recognition of Automated Fitness Stations (ATS) by issuing a draft notification. Vehicle Automated Test Centers use a variety of equipment to test for vehicle pollution. The draft notification directs the induction of new devices.
According to a notification by the Ministry of Roads and Transport, entities such as state governments, companies, associations and bodies of individuals may be allowed to open ATS for testing both personal and commercial vehicles. The data related to the fitness of vehicles has been linked to the National Vehicle Scrap Policy. This will help the government in de-registration and scrapping of old vehicles.
New rule to be implemented from next year
Automated Testing Station (ATS) uses an automated system to check the fitness of the vehicle. As per the draft notification, fitness test from ATS will be mandatory for heavy goods vehicles and heavy passenger vehicles through ATS with effect from April 1, 2023.
Automated fitness test for medium cargo vehicles, medium passenger motor vehicles and light motor vehicles (transport) will be made mandatory from June 1, 2024. As per the notification, renewal of fitness certificate for commercial vehicles that are eight years old or less will be valid for two years, while for vehicles older than eight years it will be valid for one year only.
