USB Type-C charging port standards introduced for mobiles, tablets in India

The central government is planning to implement two common types of charging ports for mobiles and wearable electronics devices. In this series, Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has introduced quality standards for USB Type-C charging port. In order to reduce e-waste as well as in the interest of consumers, the Department of Consumer Affairs, in consultation with industry stakeholders, is considering making two types of charging ports mandatory.

One of these will be a USB Type-C charger for mobiles, smartphones and tablets, and the other will be a general charger for wearable electronic devices. Consumer Affairs Secretary, Rohit Kumar Singh Told, “In the last meeting it was agreed to implement USB Type-C as a charging port for smartphones, laptops and tablets. BIS has notified standards for Type C chargers.” He said that study on single charging port for wearable electronics devices like watch is being done by Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. After receiving the report in this regard, talks will be held with the industry.

Asked about making two types of charging ports mandatory in the country, he said, “We have to go by the European Union’s deadline as mobile and electronics makers have global supply chains and don’t sell products only in India.” ” The EU recently passed a law, due to which Apple’s problems seem to be increasing. In the coming time, Apple using Lightning port in its products. iphones iPads and other devices will have to provide USB-C port instead of Lightning port.

The EU has mandated USB-C ports for charging and data transfer as standard on all mobile devices, tablets and cameras from the beginning of 2024. It was said in a report that Apple is preparing to provide USB-C port in the upcoming iPhone 15 series as well. The company has been using Lightning port in its products for a long time. Apple’s iPhones and AirPods also come with a Lightning port instead of a USB-C port.
