Transport of cars through railways increased by 68%, new private wagons being run

A Railway Ministry statement said that 2,206 rakes have been loaded for the same purpose till August this financial year. Whereas in the financial year 2021-22, 3,344 rakes were loaded. Thus, the transport of passenger vehicles through railways has increased from 1.5% in 2013-14 to 16% in 2021-22.

Railways, being a good mode of transport, not only helps the automobile industry to transport bulk quantities over long distances. This growth in automobile traffic is the result of various initiatives. This includes the availability of exclusive privately owned wagons.

Based on the issues raised by stakeholders in the automobile industry, including the Society for Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), the Automobile Freight Train Operator (AFTO) policy has been simplified from time to time, according to a statement from the Ministry of Railways. This allows automobile manufacturers to own special wagons for their needs.

To give space to SUV vehicles, the ministry added a new design of auto-carrier wagons, which is being finalized. Presently, Indian Railways has a fleet of 90 newly modified freight rakes. In addition, 43 BCACBM rakes have been inducted by approved train operators under the Automobile Freight Train Operator Scheme.

In addition, more terminals are being opened for automobile traffic as per the demands of the industry.

According to the company, if it had dispatched so many cars by truck, the trucks would have made more than 1.56 lakh trips. At the same time, 17.40 crore liters of diesel would have been consumed during this period. Maruti said that it is also reducing the emission of greenhouse gases by the service of railways. According to a PTI report, Maruti Suzuki has dispatched 11 lakh cars from the railways in the last 8 years, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 4,800 million tonnes.
