Tired of Instagram? Try Flashes—A New Decentralized Social Media App Built on Bluesky

Bored of Instagram? A New Social Media App “Flashes” Has Arrived — Here’s How It Works –

Looking for an Instagram alternative? Try Flashes—an algorithm-free, decentralized app built on Bluesky. Now available on iOS.

If you’re tired of Instagram, there’s a new alternative on the market—Flashes. This social media app is based on Bluesky and is now available on the App Store. According to TechCrunch, Flashes offers a decentralized and algorithm-free experience, giving users more control over their visual content.

What Is Flashes and Who Made It?

Flashes is built on the same AT Protocol as Bluesky. However, it’s not developed by Bluesky’s core team but by Sebastian Vogelsang, a Berlin-based third-party developer. Currently, the app is available for free on the App Store for iPhones running iOS 17 or above. As of now, there is no confirmed release date for the Android version.

Features and Functionality of Flashes

The rules for posting content on Flashes are similar to Bluesky. Previously, users could upload up to four images and one-minute videos. But with the Bluesky v1.99 update, users can now post videos up to three minutes long.

Unlike traditional social media platforms, any post made on Flashes also appears on Bluesky, and all comments and interactions are synced across both platforms.

How Is Flashes Different from Instagram?

While the interface of Flashes may remind you of Instagram—with a scrollable feed, user profiles, and image filters—there’s one major difference: you don’t need to build a new network. Flashes connects you directly to the existing Bluesky community.

Photos and videos shared on Bluesky will automatically appear on Flashes, even if the user doesn’t use the Flashes app. Similarly, posts created on Flashes will also appear on Bluesky.

You can also browse through over 50,000 custom Bluesky feeds within the Flashes app. It allows you to like, repost, and reply to posts. These interactions are visible on both Flashes and Bluesky.

Customize Your Flashes Profile

Flashes offers profile customization options, allowing you to show or hide likes, lists, and feeds. A unique feature called “Portfolio” lets you choose which images appear on your Flashes profile, giving you full control over your public gallery.

How to Get Started with Flashes

To use Flashes, you’ll need a Bluesky account. If you already have one, simply log in with your Bluesky credentials.

If not, you can create a new Bluesky account directly from the Flashes app by entering your email, password, date of birth, and agreeing to the terms. Once logged in, you can browse your Bluesky timeline, view custom feeds, or share your own photos and videos.
