When Mahindra & Mahindra launched its two born-electric cars — the BE 6 and XEV 9e — last year, they created quite a stir in India’s electric vehicle segment. The Mahindra XEV 9e was launched at a starting price of ₹21.90 lakh. Now, a new electric SUV has arrived in the market, intensifying the competition for Mahindra, and it’s priced similarly.
This newcomer is none other than Tata Motors’ Tata Harrier EV, showcased at the Auto Expo earlier this year and launched with an ex-showroom price starting at ₹21.49 lakh. Bookings will open from July 2. Let’s look at its range, features, and how it differs from the Mahindra XEV 9e.
Battery Pack and Range
-
Tata Harrier EV offers two battery packs: 65 kWh and 75 kWh.
-
With the 75 kWh battery, the Harrier EV delivers a maximum range of 627 km on a single charge.
-
Mahindra XEV 9e has a 79 kWh battery pack providing a slightly better range of 656 km on one charge.
-
In fast charging, the XEV 9e charges from 20% to 80% in about 20 minutes, while the Tata Harrier EV can add 250 km of range in just 15 minutes of charging.
Features That Increase Pressure on Mahindra
-
Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) and Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) charging: Tata Harrier EV can act like an inverter to power external devices or even charge another car, features not available in Mahindra XEV 9e.
-
Power and Torque: Tata Harrier EV generates 369 HP and 500 Nm torque, whereas Mahindra XEV 9e produces 282 HP and 380 Nm torque.
-
Acceleration: Mahindra XEV 9e takes 6.8 seconds to go from 0 to 100 km/h; Tata Harrier EV is quicker, doing it in 6.3 seconds.
-
Driving Modes: Tata Harrier EV offers 6 drive modes, capable of handling snow, rock, sand, and various surfaces. It also has boost and hill-hold features for tough terrains, adding versatility that Mahindra’s model lacks.
Bottom Line
The Tata Harrier EV, with its competitive pricing, better power, smart charging features, and versatile drive modes, poses a significant challenge to Mahindra’s XEV 9e in the electric SUV segment.
