The PlayStation 5 is no longer the top-selling console. This title was reclaimed by the Nintendo Switch.

In September, the NPD Group announced that the PlayStation 5 was its top-selling console. Prior to that, Nintendo Switch held the title for 33 consecutive months and regained leadership in October sales.

NPD Group CEO Mat Piscatella confirmed that “consumer spending on video game equipment, content and accessories is up 16% year-over-year.” In particular, equipment sales jumped 82% over last year. In terms of software, Far Cry 6 was the top-selling game in October, while Back 4 Blood came in second. Metroid Dread became the third best-selling game in October 2021.

Nintendo Switch regained its title of best-selling hardware platform in October, both in piece and dollar terms. This was facilitated by the release of a new version of Switch OLED, which even some owners of the original Switch console are purchasing.

The PlayStation 5 continues to lead 2021 sales in dollar terms, while the Switch is so far the bestseller of the year in terms of the number of consoles sold.
