A summary of the recommendations with commentary was recently published in the Medical Journal of Australia. The guidelines state that for healthy adults, “the less you drink, the less harm from alcohol.” In general, any level of alcohol consumption can be associated with certain risks.
The authors also provided recommendations for those who still cannot give up alcohol altogether.
- Healthy men and women should drink no more than 10 (previously there were 14) standard drinks per week and no more than four standard drinks on any given day.
- People under the age of 18 should not drink alcohol at all.
- Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should not consume alcohol. It is also better for lactating women to give up alcohol.
