The first mission to the moon in the history of modern Russia may take place in July 2023

The launch of Luna-25, the first mission to the Moon in the history of modern Russia, may take place in July 2023. This was announced by Igor Mitrofanov, head of the Department of Nuclear Planetology of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Yury Borisov, Director General of Roscosmos, said earlier that the launch of the device was postponed to 2023. “I think the launch will take place around July 2023. I believe that our colleagues at NPO Lavochkin [разработчик космического аппарата] – great fellows that they went to this shift. As a result of part of the tests, it turned out that there are areas where the risk of failure in this mission has not yet been fully fended off. They needed extra time to deal with this risk, and now they have that time.“, Mitrofanov said.

In July, a source in the rocket and space industry reported that the device required for a soft landing of the Luna-25 automatic station (a Doppler velocity and range meter DISD-LR manufactured by the Vega concern of Rostec) was recognized as not fully meeting the requirements of the terms of reference for accuracy. The Ruselectronics holding reported that the device would undergo additional tests over the terrain that most closely matches the lunar surface.

The fact is that this will be a polar landing, for the first time we will land a spacecraft in the vicinity of the pole. Soviet “Luna-20” and “Luna-24” landed [на Луну] already reliable enough. Now we need to create many systems anew“, Mitrofanov emphasized. According to him, specialists need to carry out additional work with devices that control the movement of the device during landing. Especially when it approaches the surface of the moon.

Just as airplanes can land in automatic mode, so in this case we must ensure automatic landing so that the only risk we can take is if a boulder suddenly happens to be in the place where one of the legs of the apparatus should be. This is a natural risk. There should be no technical risk, we should avoid it as much as possible. Now, thanks to the postponement of the launch, we expect that the technical risk will be overcome”, Mitrofanov summed up.

“Luna-25” will be the first domestic device in modern Russia on a natural satellite of the Earth. The purpose of the project is to send an automatic probe for research in the region of the south pole of the moon. It is planned that the module will be landed near the Boguslavsky crater. Recall that the launch of Luna-25 was originally planned for August this year.
