Speaking at the Digital Diamond forum in Yakutsk, Minister of Digital Development, Telecommunications and Mass Media Maksut Shadayev spoke about a satellite communications project that should provide the entire Arctic with Internet. According to Shadayev, there is an ongoing project on this subject, initiated by the Ministry of Digital Development, which has already been transferred to Roscosmos. The project envisages the launch of four spacecraft for use in a high elliptical orbit to provide Internet access. The minister noted that it is the high elliptical orbit that will ensure effective coverage of the Arctic.
Shadayev also announced the signing of an agreement that provides for satellite coverage of the Arctic regions for three years. “The issue of developing fast satellite Internet is a priority. A group has been created in the Cabinet of Ministers to consider such projects,” he said. Of other important points for the development of this area, the minister noted the initiatives of private companies. True, it is usually difficult for them to finance such projects on their own, they need support in terms of launching satellites and a guaranteed order. This task is mainly performed by Roskosmos, but the Ministry of Digital Development also supports such projects and acts as a partner, Shadayev concluded.
