The Chinese Have Unveiled a Drone the Size of a Mosquito

The device can conduct video surveillance and is controlled via a smartphone.

Chinese military engineers have unveiled a microscopic drone, comparable in size to a mosquito. Developed in the laboratories of the National Defense University of Science and Technology in Hunan Province, the device is designed for reconnaissance missions.

The drone mimics insect biomechanics and includes:

  • Two- and four-wing modifications

  • Control via smartphone

  • Dimensions small enough to enter buildings unnoticed

Although the exact specifications of its sensors have not been disclosed, experts believe the drone is capable of both audio and video surveillance, with footage saved to a remote storage device. A key breakthrough in this project is the power supply system—engineers have successfully addressed one of the main challenges in micro-drone development: limited battery life.

Beyond military reconnaissance, this technology could also be used in:

  • Search and rescue operations in disaster zones

  • Inspection of hazardous or hard-to-reach facilities

  • Tactical surveillance in densely populated urban areas

Currently, the drone remains in the experimental stage. There is no official confirmation regarding its deployment in active military units. However, the demonstration broadcast on an official Chinese TV channel signals strong military interest in this emerging technology.

Similar developments are also underway in other countries. For example, the Pentagon previously announced a program to develop swarms of micro-drones, while Dutch engineers unveiled an AI-powered racing drone capable of replacing human pilots.
