Tesla Model 3 and Model Y owners freeze en masse: Elon Musk gave an official comment

With the onset of winter, there have been many reports from Tesla owners in Canada and Alaska that vehicles equipped with heat pumps cannot heat the interior of the car in extremely cold conditions. The problem was thought to have been resolved last year when Tesla released an update, but this year it has resurfaced.

Canada and the northern United States are currently experiencing record low temperatures, with temperatures dropping below -30°C in some regions. Forums and social media are full of Tesla owners reporting problems with their heating system. The problem only affects owners of new Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles equipped with a heat pump system.

Heat pumps are very efficient, but the problem is that they do not work in extreme cold (below -15°C). Tesla claimed to have solved this problem programmatically, but apparently the system still doesn’t work. Several owners confirmed that they received a message about the failure of the climate system, after which the interior completely froze.

This creates potentially dangerous situations as Tesla owners can get stuck in remote locations in extreme cold. Tesla owners who took their cars to service centers after the problem occurred were informed that the automaker is aware of the problem and is working on releasing the software.

Tesla founder Elon Musk previously called the Model 3 and Model Y heat pump system “one of the best designs he’s ever seen.” Today he said that this problem is a priority for the entire team. A little later, he confirmed that the company had already released a firmware update that should recalibrate the heat pump expansion valve.

Whether this will solve the problem completely, we will find out after the appearance of new owner reviews.
