According to a Reuters report , when the earthquake struck, Fatma Ahmed’s family had fled their building in the northern Syrian city of Aleppo because they had to reach a hospital. Fatma was having labor pain, so they all left the house.
A few hours later she gave birth to her third child in the hospital. Sharing his experience, he said that he saw a scene of devastation on the way. The journey to the hospital was difficult. However, the rescuers kept guiding them to safety.
She said of her new son, Najm al-Din Mahmoud, “May God protect him, give him a good life and don’t take me away from him. He gave me life. I was afraid of losing him.”
Fatma told that even after the birth of the child, the mother and the child were in danger. Later that day there was another major earthquake. Then he was lying in the upper maternity ward.
Unable to escape, they were left alone as the doctor fled to save his life. She said that her parents and her two children aged one and three were on the ground floor of the hospital. Her husband, a soldier, is stationed outside Aleppo and was not there.
She said, “I wrapped him (the baby) and kept praying to God to protect us until the earthquake was over and we were taken down safely.”
