Suzuki Motor may use its Gujarat-based plant to manufacture the upcoming electric cars of Maruti and Toyota. Reports suggest that Maruti Suzuki’s parent company Suzuki has been selected to benefit under the government’s Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, allowing the company to manufacture electric cars for the needs of both Maruti and Toyota.
On the prospects of Toyota cars being made at the Gujarat plant, Kenichi Ayukawa, MD and CEO, Maruti told Times of India, “We have to [टोयोटा] Will have to discuss with you.” He added, “This part is still under discussion by Suzuki Japan. We haven’t got any final result. But we have to watch carefully. ,
Ayukawa further told the publication that Toyota Japan has announced an aggressive global plan for electric models, but he is not clear whether any of those plans will make their way to Suzuki’s Gujarat plant.
Toyota and Suzuki are already working in India with a business alliance as well as product-development and model-sharing. Toyota India has rebadged several ICE models of Maruti Suzuki, including the Baleno-Glanza and Vitara Brezza-Urban Cruiser. Also, Toyota may soon launch the Ciaz in India with the Belta badge.
