Government Implements New Rules for Satellite Communication: What It Means for Starlink & OneWeb
🚀 The Indian government has introduced new regulations for satellite communication devices. This comes at a crucial time when companies like Starlink and OneWeb are waiting for spectrum allocation rules to be finalized.
Key Highlights:
✅ Starlink and OneWeb may launch their satellite internet services in India soon
✅ New regulations apply to satellite communication equipment
✅ Only government-certified devices will be approved for use
Starlink & OneWeb’s Long-Awaited Entry into India
Companies like Starlink (by SpaceX) and OneWeb have been eager to launch satellite internet services in India. Starlink, in particular, has been trying to establish its presence for a long time.
According to a report by ET Telecom, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has introduced new requirements for testing and certification of satellite equipment, including user terminals and gateways.
While telecom companies are still waiting for clarity on spectrum allocation, the introduction of these new certification rules suggests that Starlink’s India launch is not far away.
Certified Equipment Mandatory for Satellite Internet Services
🛰️ From August 2024, only certified equipment will be allowed for satellite communication services in India.
📜 On February 25, 2025, the DoT issued new standards for testing 14 types of telecom equipment, including Non-Geostationary Satellite Orbit (NGSO) systems, integrated gateways, and user terminals.
📅 These new regulations will become mandatory 180 days after the notification date.
🚫 After August 2024, no person or company will be allowed to import, sell, or use unapproved telecom equipment.
Why is Certification Important?
🔹 The Telecom Engineering Centre (TEC) will conduct testing to ensure that new satellite devices do not interfere with existing networks.
🔹 This move is part of India’s Telecom Equipment Testing & Certification Scheme (TEC Scheme), launched in 2019 to ensure that all telecom devices meet national security and performance standards.
🔹 Phase 5 of this certification process now includes satellite communication devices, ensuring safe and efficient operations in India.
Final Thoughts: What This Means for Indian Users
💡 The introduction of these new regulations signals that India is preparing for the arrival of satellite-based internet services.
💰 However, companies like Starlink and OneWeb will have to comply with these certification rules, which could delay their commercial launch.
🌍 Once approved, satellite internet will improve connectivity in remote and rural areas, benefiting millions of users across India.
