Sony May Delay PlayStation 6 Launch to 2028 Amid Global RAM Shortage

Sony is reportedly considering delaying the launch of the PlayStation 6 due to an ongoing global RAM shortage.

In recent years, insiders and industry representatives have suggested that Sony was aiming to release the PlayStation 6 in 2027 or slightly later. However, according to a new report from Bloomberg, the company is now preparing a backup plan.

Bloomberg recently published an article discussing the global memory (RAM) shortage and its impact on electronics manufacturing. The situation does not appear to be improving. By 2026, major technology companies — including Amazon, Microsoft, and Alphabet Inc. — are expected to spend at least $650 billion on artificial intelligence development. In comparison, they invested $217 billion in 2025.

As AI infrastructure demand increases, component prices continue to rise. For example, between December 2025 and January 2026, the cost of some types of memory reportedly surged by 75%.

Due to these rising costs, Sony is said to be reconsidering its timeline for the PS6. While the console was previously expected to arrive in 2027, Bloomberg’s sources claim the launch could now be postponed until 2028 or even 2029.

Meanwhile, there are also reports that the Nintendo Switch 2 could see a price increase in 2026, as Nintendo has not ruled out such a possibility.
