Sony has found a way to radically improve cameras in smartphones

The pixel transistors of conventional CMOS image sensors are located on the same substrate, and in a new development from Sony, they are placed on different layers. This allows the saturation signal to be approximately doubled compared to conventional sensors. The technology also expands the dynamic range and reduces the amount of noise. This makes the image much better.

Specifically, increased dynamic range and improved noise reduction can help avoid underexposure and overexposure errors in a combination of bright and dim lighting (such as backlit shooting). A smartphone with such a camera will be able to produce high quality images with low noise, even in low light conditions.

Sony already intends to use the new technology in smartphones.
