Scientists scout Venus’ past with new spacecraft

DAVINCI, as the probe was named, will be sent to Venus as part of a new American mission of the same name – the first to enter Venus’s atmosphere in more than 40 years. The goal is to explore the planet in order to study its atmospheric composition and better understand the formation of this very atmosphere. The probe is slated to launch in 2029.

The probe will measure the chemical composition of Venus’s atmosphere, its temperature, pressure and wind speed, along the way making infrared images before landing on the planet’s surface. It will take about an hour. The task of the VMS is to absorb gas during the descent of the probe, analyze it and provide information on the chemical composition of Venus’s atmosphere and possible links to the mineralogical properties of the surface.
