Scientists have found signs of the moon in an asteroid close to Earth

Kamoaleva belongs to the subcategory of near-Earth asteroids, which revolve around the Sun and remain relatively close to the Earth. Little is known about these objects because they are dim and difficult to observe. This asteroid was first discovered by the PanSTARRS telescope in Hawaii in 2016. Kamoaleva is similar in size to a Ferris wheel. It is located at a distance of about 14.5 million kilometers from the Earth.

Astronomers have found that Kamoalev’s spectral type corresponds to lunar rocks. This suggests that the asteroid has a common origin with the Moon. There are probably no analogues to this asteroid yet. How exactly this fragment could have separated from the Moon is also not clear.
