According to one of the co-authors of the study, Ju-Sheng Ong, heartburn turned out to be a component of factors that increased the risk of severe coronavirus by 15%. The same genes that cause heartburn are responsible for this.
The experts explained why this is happening. People prone to heartburn are often diagnosed with a disease such as GERD – gastroesophageal reflux disease. This disease has the same risk factors as severe forms of coronavirus. These include obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. The presence of these factors increases the risk of severe covid disease and hospitalization.
