MPs are also given a house to live by the sub-committee of the Housing Committee. This housing is arranged according to the criteria set by that committee. Each MP gets the right to license-free flat or hostel during his tenure. If an MP is allotted a bungalow, he has to pay a full general license fee.
So much water and electricity free
The MP gets free water and 50,000 units of electricity every year for housing in Delhi. It provides 25,000 units of electricity light meters and 25,000 units of electricity meters, or by mixing both. This facility is also provided to MPs living in private residence in Delhi. 50,000 free local calls per year are available on each of these three telephones. This means that the MP gets a total of 1,50,000 free local calls in a year, if the chairman of the parliamentary committee calls from one telephone installed at his residence in Delhi/New Delhi, he does not have to pay any fee. MPs can use these 1,50,000 free calls on any number of telephones, but these telephones should be in the name of the MP and the MP has to bear the cost of installation and fare.
Apart from this, every MP gets a mobile connection of MTNL with a national roaming facility for use in the constituency. If the service of MTNL or BSNL is not available, then the MP can get a connection of a private mobile operator. Calls made from these mobile phones are added to 50,000 free local calls. However, for private mobile connections, registration and rent fee is to be paid to the MP himself.
If the MP has made more calls, their expenses will be adjusted with free calls for next year. Apart from this, the calls that are not made in a year can be kept until the seat of the MP is vacant. The MP also has the right to take broadband service from MTNL/BSNL on one of these three telephones, but for this the government has to pay Rs 1,500 every month, which is directly done to MTNL/BSNL. Thus, these features provide a lot of support to the MP for their actions and communication, so that they can fulfill their responsibilities well.
