Samsung begins mass production of memory for next-generation self-driving electric vehicles


Samsung this week announced the launch of “a comprehensive line of advanced memory solutions designed for the next generation of autonomous electric vehicles.” The new line-up includes a 256GB PCIe Gen3 NVMe BGA SSD, 2GB GDDR6 DRAM and 2GB DDR4 DRAM for high-performance infotainment, as well as 2GB GDDR6 DRAM and Universal Flash. Flash Storage (UFS) 128 GB for autonomous driving systems.

Advanced infotainment features such as HD maps, video streaming and 3D gaming, along with the growing use of autonomous driving systems, have driven demand for high-performance, high-capacity SSDs and DRAM across the automotive industry, the manufacturer said.

The controller for the aforementioned Samsung SSD and the firmware for it are developed in-house. The drive delivers 2100 MB / s sequential read and 300 MB / s sequential write speeds, respectively seven and two times faster than today’s eMMC modules. 2GB GDDR6 DRAM offers transfer rates up to 14Gbps per pin. High speeds are necessary for complex data processing in various multimedia applications, as well as for working with large amounts of data in autonomous driving tasks.

All new Samsung automotive solutions comply with the AEC-Q100, the global standard for automotive reliability, operating stably at temperatures ranging from -40 ° C to + 105 ° C.
