Electric Car Sales: Sales of electric vehicles are increasing in India. However, the monthly sales for January 2023 have registered a decline in the sales of electric cars. According to the report of the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA), the sales of electric cars declined by 10.51% to 3,739 units in the month of January.
According to FADA data, Tata Motors sold 2,426 units of electric cars last month, registering a 17% decline in sales. At the same time, MG Motors registered a decline of 12.55% in e-vehicle sales. The company sold 425 units in the month of January last, while in December 2022 the figure was 486 units.
However, amidst all this, there was one such company which registered a growth of 164% in sales. This company was China’s electric vehicle manufacturer BYD, which sold 132 electric cars in the Indian market last month. The company had sold only 50 vehicles in December 2022. With this, BMW’s sales increase from 29 units in December 2022 to 123 units in January 2023.
Hyundai Motor India sales saw a marginal increase from last month. The company sold 111 units in January as compared to 91 units sold in December 2022. Sales of commercial electric cars in the passenger segment were also down. According to FADA, the sales of commercial electric cars are expected to drop to only 131 units in January 2023 as against 170 units sold in December last year.

Sales of electric three-wheelers in January also declined to 33,949 units as against 33,949 units sold in December 2022. No change was observed in the sales of electric two-wheelers. According to FADA, 64,348 units of electric two-wheelers were sold in December 2022. Whereas in January this figure stood at 64,363 units.
