Safety vs. Affordability: The Dilemma of Maruti Suzuki’s Wagon R, Swift, and Alto K10, Why Safety Concerns Loom Over Wagon R, Swift, and Alto K10?”

Maruti Suzuki cars are highly popular in the Indian market, with 6 to 7 cars from the company consistently making it to the top-10 list in monthly sales reports. Particularly, the Wagon R and Swift models consistently rank in the top-5.

Maruti cars are known for their affordability, which greatly appeals to consumers. Additionally, Maruti cars offer excellent mileage with both petrol and CNG engines.

However, these cars fall short in terms of safety. The Wagon R, Swift, and Alto K10, which are among the top-selling cars, have received zero ratings for safety in the Global NCAP crash tests.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R: The Wagon R is Maruti Suzuki’s best-selling car in the Indian market, with 200,177 units sold in the financial year 2023-2024. However, its safety ratings have disappointed consumers.

The Maruti Wagon R received a 1-star safety rating in the adult safety category and a 0-star rating in child safety in the Global NCAP crash tests. The starting price of the Wagon R is Rs 5,54,500 (ex-showroom), and it delivers a mileage of 25.19 km per liter with a petrol engine.

Maruti Suzuki Swift: Following the Wagon R, the Swift is the next best-selling car. The company sold 195,312 units of the Swift in the last financial year. However, its safety ratings did not meet consumer expectations.

In the Global NCAP crash tests, the Maruti Swift achieved a 1-star safety rating in both adult and child safety categories. The starting price of the Swift in the market is Rs 5.99 lakh (ex-showroom), and it offers a mileage of 22.56 km per liter with a petrol engine.

Maruti Suzuki Alto K10: The Alto K10 is another budget-friendly car offered by Maruti. Sales of 111,955 units of this car were recorded in the financial year 2023-24. However, its safety ratings are also disappointing.

In the Global NCAP crash tests, the Alto K10 received a 2-star safety rating in the adult safety category and a 0-star rating in the child safety category. The starting price of the Alto K10 in the market is Rs 3.90 lakh (ex-showroom).

It delivers a mileage of 24.90 km per liter with a petrol engine and 33.85 km per liter with CNG. This car is popular in both rural and urban areas.
