Russia will begin to interrogate suspects on the Internet

The amendments imply the introduction of a new article, 189.1, into the existing law, which will take into account and spell out all the rules for conducting investigative measures online. The authors of the bill explain the importance of the amendments by observing the “reasonable time frame for criminal proceedings”, which often cannot be carried out due to the remote location of the participants in the case from the investigating authorities. At the same time, it is noted that the technical capabilities of conducting an online investigation can be afforded “not by all divisions of the bodies carrying out preliminary investigation.”

“The proposed article 189.1 of the Criminal Procedure Code of the Russian Federation will make it possible to interrogate witnesses and other persons listed in the draft law, through videoconferencing at the preliminary investigation stage, in compliance with the basic rules and requirements for the investigation of a criminal case and taking into account the peculiarities of interrogating minors,” the explanatory note to the bill.
