Rumor: Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will fix an important flaw of its predecessor

According to insiders, Qualcomm’s new flagship will receive not only architectural improvements compared to the current model. The chip is also credited with another useful feature – hardware support for the AV1 codec, which mobile platforms of other brands have long acquired.

An important advantage of AV1 over VP9 is the best compression ratio (about 30% difference) without a significant reduction in image quality. This reduces the load on the network when broadcasting high-definition video. In addition, the AV1 codec developed by Alliance fo Open Media is free.

Network sources report that following the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, an expansion of the range of proprietary SoCs with support for a promising codec is expected. Qualcomm itself previously stated that it could not implement this feature, since chip production is scheduled for 2 to 3 years in advance, and it is almost impossible to make changes to the pipeline on the go.

According to rumors, the new flagship SoC with the article number SM8550 will be presented at the end of this year, and the first smartphones based on it will hit the market in early 2023. Insiders also claim that Google may soon require manufacturers of set-top boxes running Android 10 and newer OS versions to implement hardware support for the AV1 codec in their devices.
