Rumor: 2K to release at least three LEGO sports games starting this year

Portal Video Games Chronicle (VGC), citing informants familiar with the situation, shared details about the upcoming expansion of the list of game developers in the LEGO series.

Recall that since 2005, the British studio TT Games (owned by Warner Bros. Games) has owned the exclusive rights to create LEGO games, but the manufacturer of the famous designer is allegedly not going to renew the agreement.

The resulting niche, according to VGC, will be occupied by 2K. The American publisher is planning a whole line of LEGO sports games:

  • football from Sumo Digital (Sackboy: A Big Adventure) this year – they plan to release it in conjunction with the upcoming World Cup, which will begin on November 21;
  • a race from Visual Concepts (NBA 2K, WWE 2K series) in 2023 – the project will have an open world;
  • an unknown game based on a “major sports franchise” – no details yet.

LEGO’s decision to refuse to renew its contract with Warner Bros. Games is motivated by the decline in sales of series projects, the uncertainty around the future of Warner Bros. in the gaming industry and recent news about poor working conditions at TT Games.

The next LEGO release will be LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. The action adventure is expected to premiere on April 5 on PC (Steam), PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S, and Nintendo Switch.
