The scooter segment in particular has become very popular in this segment. Siddharth Lal revealed that Royal Enfield is indeed working on electric motorcycles, and there are some basic platforms that the engineering teams are putting together.
However, before the Royal Enfield electric motorcycle, some bikes of the company’s 350cc range will be launched in the market. A Royal Enfield electric motorcycle can be expected in around 3-4 years. This motorcycle can be launched in the market by the year 2025-26.
The electric motorcycle that will be launched by Royal Enfield is likely to be a fresh one, and will not be retro-fitted into one of the company’s existing motorcycles. Royal Enfield is basically putting together an electric motorcycle, which is based on an all-new platform.
The electric motorcycle will not actually replace its petrol powered model and it is being told that the range is going to be much bigger. Instead, it will be some kind of motorcycle that people will use for relatively short distance rides for comfort.
Globally, motorcycle brands like Harley Davidson and Triumph are already working on high performance motorcycles. Harley Davidson has also launched an electric bike called Livewire. The Livewire is an electric motorcycle producing 100 Bhp of power.
The motorcycle offers a range of 235 kms on a single charge in Eco mode and around 120 kms in Sport mode. The electric Harley, which weighs over 250kg, boasts exciting performance numbers, from 0 to 100 kmph in 3.5 seconds and a top-speed of 177 kmph.
Triumph is working on a high performance street electric bike like its Street Triple range. The Triumph electric superbike prototype, called the TE-1, produces 175 bhp power and 109 Nm of torque and can accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in less than 4 seconds.
