Resources with stock images prohibit the placement and sale of images created by neural networks

The Getty Images platform has banned the placement and sale of images created using neural networks on its site. Instruments such as DALL-E, Midjourney and Stable Diffusion were hit. Thus, the largest stock image platform has finally introduced such restrictions. Previously, they have already appeared on the sites of Newgrounds, PurplePort and FurAffinity.

The reason is simple – possible copyright infringement. As Craig Peters, CEO of Getty Images, explained, this is a preventive measure. So far, the site has not faced lawsuits, but this is a way to avoid reputational losses.

The fact is that all neural networks for content creation are trained on existing images and videos, and the list may include works of art, stock photos, news publications, personal pages of artists, and so on. As a result, some images have the potential to infringe copyright, especially if they are sold. Some artists have already turned to legislators to resolve this issue.

Similar measures have been introduced at the Shutterstock site, but there have not yet been formulated final rules for this. At the same time, many images have already been removed, although Getty Images asks users to inform them about those that still remain.

Previously reportedthat Getty Images is actively exploring the NFT market.
