Ransomware: Ransomware Attacks Rise by 55% in India; Hackers First Seen in the US

According to a recent report, ransomware groups have carried out 5,233 attacks across 153 countries, using underground resources. The United States was the most targeted country, followed by Canada, the UK, Germany, and others.

In India, ransomware attacks have increased by 55% over the past year. There were 98 ransomware attacks in India last year, with the highest number occurring in May and October. This data comes from the recently released report, Ransomware Trends 2024: Insights for Global Cybersecurity Readiness, published by CyberPeace, a cybersecurity agency.

CyberPeace continuously monitored 166 threat actor groups using advanced Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) techniques and collected data from 658 servers and underground resources. The report highlights that “Killsek” was the most prominent threat, with “Lockbit3” emerging as the second most significant. Other groups such as RansomHub, DarkVault, and Clop showed moderate levels of activity.

Most Affected Sectors in India
In India, the industrial sector was the most targeted, accounting for 75% of the total ransomware incidents. This was followed by the healthcare sector (12%) and the financial sector (10%). The government sector was the least affected, with only 3% of incidents reported. This distribution emphasizes the need for stronger cybersecurity measures in the industrial sector, while also addressing vulnerabilities in the healthcare, financial, and government domains.
