Qualcomm has announced several new products at its annual Snapdragon Tech Summit, including the top-end Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 mobile platform for smartphones, as well as the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 mobile platform for Windows mobiles.
As the name suggests, the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 is the successor to the 8cx Gen 2 model launched last year. The SoC is built using a 5nm process technology, a first for chips built for Windows devices. The company has promised an 85% improvement in CPU performance and a 60% improvement in GPU performance.
Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 offers support for Qualcomm Snapdragon X55, X62 and X65 5G modems. As a reminder, the Snapdragon X65 offers peak download speeds of up to 10Gbps, the Snapdragon X55 offers speeds up to 7.5Gbps, and the Snapdragon X62 up to 4.4Gbps.
The Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 includes Qualcomm’s Spectra image processor, which promises better autofocus, auto white balance, and auto exposure for video conferencing. The SoC supports one to four cameras, as well as 4K HDR video capture at 30fps and 720p slow-motion video at 480fps.
Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 supports UFS 3.1 flash which offers faster read and write speeds. There is also support for Qualcomm Noise and Echo Cancellation technologies to suppress unwanted background sounds.
The company claims the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 will provide “multi-day battery life,” but did not provide any details related to this. Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 devices are expected to be released in the first half of 2022.
