Lawmakers in the US state of Minnesota are trying to ban social media platforms from using algorithms to recommend content to people under 18.
The algorithm ban applies to platforms with at least 1 million users and states that these companies will be “prohibited from using social media algorithms to ‘target’ content directed at users under the age of 18.”
But not everyone likes it, as tech industry lobbyists argue that the bill would violate the First Amendment of the US Constitution, which provides for freedom of speech and the press, and also force companies to collect more data on the age and location of users.
Companies will receive a $1,000 fine for each violation.
