Scientists from the Perm National Research Polytechnic University (PNRPU) have refined the method for calculating the thermal load on the elements of gas turbine engines, which will help predict the nature of their damage due to overheating.
Scientists have refined the mathematical model (turbulence model), which analyzes the effectiveness of different types of cooling blades in the engine. This made it possible to improve the accuracy of the calculation results. “[Модель] allows to obtain reliable forecasts of the thermal state of the blades by calculation. More accurate calculations will make it possible to predict in advance the possible appearance of various defects – burnouts and cracks – and take measures to eliminate them.“, – said the university.
The object of attention of the authors was the cooled blades – the main part of the turbine, which takes on the entire thermal load. Replacing this component can be as much as half the cost of an engine repair.
According to the authors, an improved approach will help make gas turbine engines more reliable by providing designers with more information about the conditions under which defects can appear.
