The Pentagon has demanded access to AI technology from major artificial intelligence companies, but Anthropic is resisting. A debate has emerged over how its Claude AI model can be used.
The US Department of Defense (DoD) is asking leading AI companies to allow the military to use their technology “for all lawful purposes.” While companies like OpenAI and Google are reportedly in discussions with the Pentagon, Anthropic has shown “the greatest resistance” to the proposal, according to media reports.
Anthropic maintains that its Claude AI model should not be used for “fully autonomous weapons” or “mass domestic surveillance.” Company representatives say their discussions with the Department of Defense have focused on setting these limitations, rather than on “Claude’s use in specific combat situations.”
The Pentagon, however, reportedly considers such restrictions “impractical.” Officials are said to be increasingly frustrated with the prolonged negotiations. According to reports, the government is even considering terminating its $200 million contract with Anthropic if an agreement cannot be reached.
