Pakistan urges India to resume normal functioning of Indus Waters Treaty

On June 30, Pakistan urged India to resume the normal operation of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), which India had suspended in May following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. This call came after a supplemental award by the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) in The Hague on June 27, which upheld the treaty’s validity and the court’s jurisdiction in a case concerning Pakistan’s objections to India’s Kishenganga and Ratle hydropower projects.

India rejected the ruling, stating it does not recognize the PCA’s authority in this matter and dismissed the award as a “so-called supplemental award.” Meanwhile, Pakistan maintained that the decision confirms the IWT is still valid and cannot be unilaterally suspended, urging India to fulfill its treaty obligations. Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar emphasized that international agreements like the IWT must be respected in both letter and spirit.
