Over 800 Anthem Fans Demand That The Game Be Saved and Returned to the Community
In an unexpected development, EA’s decision to shut down Anthem‘s servers has sparked a passionate response from its fanbase. Despite the game’s rocky launch and mixed reception, a group of dedicated players is calling for the title to be preserved — and even revived — by the community.
An online petition has garnered over 800 signatures from fans who are urging Electronic Arts (EA) to hand over the game’s servers and necessary files to the community. Their request also includes the removal of all microtransactions from the game. Supporters propose that EA release an update as a free DLC, allowing the game to remain accessible while removing any commercial incentives for private monetization.
“Few AAA publishers support live service preservation — and none at this scale. This is a great opportunity for EA to set a new standard,” the petition reads. “Demonstrating that a major studio can preserve their games in real-time by handing over hosting power to the community will allow other AAA publishers to follow suit. Please, EA, save Anthem. Publish the server files or dedicated server binaries so we, the community, can carry the torch and ensure that Anthem stories continue to be told — not just remembered.”
The plea comes at a time when game preservation is becoming an increasingly critical issue in the industry. A broader petition calling for the protection of online and digital-only games has already been signed by over 1.2 million gamers. However, the European Association of Developers and Publishers recently opposed the idea, stating that companies should maintain the right to shut down inactive or unprofitable projects.
For the Anthem community, the petition is more than just about one game — it’s a statement on the importance of preserving online multiplayer experiences in an era where live-service shutdowns are becoming common. Whether EA will respond to this community-driven initiative remains to be seen.
