Now soldiers will be able to protect the country without any problem in minus 60 degrees, DRDO has prepared ‘Him Kavach’ – DRDO HimKavach Cold Weather Clothing System Clears User Trials ntc

Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has successfully developed ‘Him Kavach’ multi-layered clothing system, which is designed to protect military personnel working in extreme cold environments. The snow armor, designed to withstand temperatures ranging from +20°C to -60°C, has recently passed all tests under actual operational conditions, marking a significant advancement in India’s defense capabilities. .

The snow armor system consists of multiple layers, each of which performs a specific function to ensure optimal insulation, breathability and comfort. This design approach allows soldiers to adapt to changing climatic conditions by adding or removing layers as needed. Such modularity is important for operations in the Himalayan region, where temperatures can drop drastically, posing serious challenges to personnel.

Before Him Kavach, the Indian Army was dependent on the Extreme Cold Weather Clothing System (ECWCS), a three-layered ensemble developed by DRDO’s Defense Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences (DIPAS). The ECWCS was designed to provide insulation, waterproofing and ergonomic comfort at extreme altitudes, with the outer layer making it adaptable in snowy and non-snowy terrains.

The successful user trials of HIM Kavach underline DRDO’s commitment to equip India’s armed forces with state-of-the-art technology tailored to their operational requirements. With tensions continuing on the Himalayan borders, the need of the hour is the introduction of such advanced protective equipment, which will boost the morale and efficiency of the troops deployed in these challenging environments.

Apart from its thermal insulation properties, the Himachav system is designed for mobility and durability, to ensure that soldiers can perform their duties without any hindrance. Snow armor will soon be inducted into the army, which will provide Indian soldiers a strong defense against the extreme cold prevalent in the Himalayan region. This development not only enhances individual soldier performance but also contributes to the overall operational readiness of the Indian Army in high altitude warfare.
