There will be a four-fold increase in compensation for serious injuries. That is, now for serious injuries, compensation of up to Rs 50,000 will be given to the victim, which was earlier Rs 12,500. The new compensation will be effective from April 1, 2022 and will be applicable on all roads and highways across India. In the notification issued by the ministry, the process of applying for compensation and release of payment to the victim has also been time-bound.

In addition, the ministry has said that it will also create a ‘Motor Vehicle Accident Fund’, which will be used to provide fair compensation to victims of hit-and-run cases. This fund will be used for providing compensation in case of hit-and-run accidents, treatment of accident victims and any other purpose, the notifications said.

Under this scheme, the Ministry has come up with a detailed investigation of road accidents, Detailed Accident Report (DAR) and its reporting process along with timelines for various stakeholders for speedy settlement of claims. According to the latest government data, a total of 3,66,138 road accidents occurred in India during 2020, resulting in 1,31,714 deaths.

Drunk driving and driving on the wrong side have been cited as the main reasons for these accidents. According to the new data, during the year 2020, 8,355 accidents occurred due to drunken driving, 20,228 due to wrong side driving, 2,721 due to red light violation, 6,753 due to use of mobile phone while driving, while a total of 62,738 accidents were due to other reasons. were recorded.

As far as levying fines for traffic rule violations is concerned, Uttar Pradesh has collected the highest number of fines last year. Uttar Pradesh has collected Rs 447 crore as fine, Haryana Rs 326 crore, Rajasthan Rs 267 crore and Bihar Rs 258 crore.
