This electric Tata Ace was recently spotted during the shooting of a TV commercial and some pictures have also surfaced. As can be seen in the images, except for the badging of a Prominent EV on the fully covered cargo cabin, no changes have been made to the electric version.
It looks completely similar to its internal combustion engine (ICE) model. While this is the first time that the Tata Ace will be launched with a factory-fitted EV powertrain, this is not the first case where a light commercial pickup truck will be battery powered.
Earlier EV startups like Etrio and Northway MotorSport have made retro-fitted electric powertrains for the Tata Ace with 20kWh and 18kWh lithium-ion battery packs respectively. Even a fully electric Tata Ace is not a new project for Tata Motors.
That’s because the company attempted to make it completely electric for the first time nearly a decade ago. The Tata Ace EV was first designed and conceptualized by the automaker’s European Technology Centre, and the battery-powered version of the LCV was launched in Europe in small numbers.
However, those units of Tata Ace Electric were powered by lead acetate battery packs. Due to changes in government incentives and the gradual acquisition of electric vehicles by the industry, Tata Motors discontinued the sale of the Tata Ace Electric.
At present, not much information has been revealed about the Tata Ace Electric, but it is expected to be launched in the coming few weeks. Tata Motors may use a battery pack rated between 18kWh and 20kWh capacity, which can offer a range of 120 to 150 km on a single charge.
Talking about its ICE version, Tata Ace gets a 2-cylinder, 700cc, naturally aspirated direction injection diesel engine, which makes 20 bhp power and 45 Nm torque. Apart from this, the option of 694cc MPFI 4 stroke, water-cooled petrol engine is also available in it.
This engine provides 30 bhp power and 55 newton meter maximum torque. The same engine is also used by the company in the CNG version of Tata Ace, although in the CNG version, this engine provides 25 bhp power and 50 Newton meter torque.
